AIMS OF EPS PROGRAMS
As the medium of education at EUL is English, the English Preparatory School aims to prepare students for their further studies within the various departments of the University.
Students finishing the program will:
· Converse effectively with a native speaker on social and professional topics
· Read materials for social and professional needs
· Write reports and essays
· Take notes in lectures and make notes from reading materials
· Correspond formally and informally
To achieve this aim, emphasis is placed on Reading, Writing, Listening and
Speaking skills as well as on the formal grammar of the language.
The overall program consists of Main Course, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking activities in the classroom. Audio-visual activities aim at developing the students’ note-taking skills and preparing them to use the language orally. Time allocated for the skills is as follows:

PERIOD OF STUDY
The students in each program are required to study for a minimum of 1 (one) year to reach the Faculty standards. In each program, the number of contact hours is 20 (twenty) hours per week.
PLACEMENT TEST AND EPS PROGRAMS
At the beginning of the academic year, students take a placement test and are divided into three levels:
Level A Pre-Intermediate
Level B Elementary
Level C Elementary
According to the results of this test, the initial level of each student is determined.
The following procedure is followed to determine the initial level of the students:
60 and or above 60 marks: Students are sent to the faculties (ELT students need to receive at least 70)
50-59 marks: Students take the advanced writing and speaking examinations.
Students study in the Preparatory School unless they receive a passing grade in advanced placement test. (These students are placed at Level A).
40-49 marks: Students are placed at Level B.
30-39 marks: Students are placed at Level C.
ELT Students: Prospective ELT students need to receive a passing grade of 70 and or above 70 marks. Those students who receive a grade from 60 to 69 marks will have to take an advanced English Placement Test including writing and speaking. Once students are sent to ELT Department, they will be given another test by ELT Department to decide whether they are eligible enough to study at the department or not.
During the placement test, the students are required to mark only the answers they are sure of and not to mark the others. If the students insist on marking the questions that they are not sure of, they will mislead us in determining their exact initial level.

THE SUMMER COURSE
EPS is responsible for organizing the Summer Course program. The students who fail the English Preparatory School and the students who fail to attend a minimum of 80% of teaching hours can follow the Summer Course for seven weeks. Students need to register for the Summer Course at the end of spring semester. The Summer Course Program aims at giving support to the students who are preparing for the Summer Course Proficiency Exam. If a student fails to pass the Summer Course Proficiency Exam as well, s/he has to repeat the EPS program for another year.
NOTICE BOARDS
You can find the announcements, exam results, social and cultural notices and official university notices on these notice boards.
It is strictly forbidden to stick or write adverts or notices onto the walls of the school since this often spoils the paintwork and will quickly make the walls and the corridors look untidy and unattractive. If you have any information that you wish to publicize (for sale notices, information about weekend trips, etc.) you must take it to the Public Relations Department for approval and then the message will appear on the notice boards.
Students who are ill should directly go to the EUL Health Center. The Preparatory School system requires attendance of all students. In this system, absenteeism is simply defined as ‘not present in class’ and you will gain a 10 points bonus for attendance. For this reason, you are not exempted from the obligation to attend classes during the period covered by the School Doctor’s approved report and you are responsible for all the teaching material included in the program. Student missing more than 20% of their classes will not be able to take the final exam.
Students are considered ‘excused’ from the exams which may be given on the day(s) for which they have a doctor’s report. There will be ‘Make-ups’ for the following exams:
· Mid-term exams
· Final exams
· Proficiency exam
There will be no ‘Make-ups’ for the quizzes.
Students who fail to attend exam(s) without a valid excuse get ‘0’ (zero) as their mark for the exam(s) which may be given on the date(s) of absence. Doctors’ reports will not be accepted unless approved by the EPS Administrative Board.
DISCIPLINE IN CLASS
· Students are reminded to be in class on time. The EPS teachers have very strict regulations on punctuality. A tolerance of 5 minutes is given for the first period of the day only.
· Students should come to class with their course books, workbooks and pens, otherwise teachers will send students out and mark them as absent.
· Students who disturb lessons will be asked to leave the class.
STUDENT DISCIPLINARY BY-LAWS
It’s the primary duty of the EPS students to comply with the Student Disciplinary By-Laws. The Student Disciplinary By-Laws consist of the disciplinary rules, regulations and procedures, which will be initiated if any student is engaged in unacceptable and unlawful activities.
Some of the attitudes and behaviors which result in the disciplinary action are as follows:
Students must always carry their identification cards. They will have to show them whenever they are asked. If necessary, invigilators have the right to check the students’ ID cards before and during an examination.
PHOTOCOPYING FACILITIES
Photocopy machines are available for student use in the Library. Photocopy cards are sold in the library. Students can also make photocopies in the Copy Center near Hayken Cafeteria.
PREPARATORY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
Preparatory school scholarships are awarded at the end of the academic year according to the highest achievement points scored in each group. The students who achieve the highest grades in each group are awarded a discount by the Scholarship Commission.
