CURRICULUM VITAE T. Serra Görpe was born in Istanbul, in 1965. She finished Yeşilyurt Hamdullah Suphi Tanrıöver primary school and then continued her secondary education at English High School For Girls (Beyoğlu Anadolu Lisesi) in Turkey. Serra Görpe graduated from Boğaziçi University (Istanbul- Turkey) Psychology Department with an Honorary Degree (1984-1988). She then completed her postgraduate degree in Social Psychology at the same university and was awarded with a MS degree. (1992). Serra Görpe received another postgraduate degree (MS) in in Public Relations from Boston University/USA- School of Communication (1992). She has worked in the private sector for ten years in public relations and communication. Right after her graduation, she started working at Galleria-Ataköy, (part of Ataköy Tourism Groups) which is the first American-style shopping mall of Turkey. Then she worked at World Trade Centre, Vakko retail store and MPR Marketing Public Relations Agency. She was the Assistant General Manager at MPR Marketing Public Relations Agency before switching to the academic world. She received her PhD degree in Public Relations and Advertising from Istanbul University, Social Sciences Institute in 1999. Her thesis was titled ‘Effective Communication’. She started her academic career at Istanbul University, Communication Faculty, Public Relations and Advertising Department (1999) first as a lecturer. She was promoted to assistant professor in 2001 and has been an associate professor in Applied Communications since 2003. She is promoted to full professor in October 2009. Serra Görpe teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on public relations in Istanbul University, Communication Faculty. She has also been a part-time lecturer at East Mediterranean University Communication Faculty in TRNC since 2006 (2006-2009). She was also an adjunct lecturer at Istanbul Bilgi University (Spring 2008). The courses she teaches include ‘Public Relations Campaigns,’ ‘Strategic Public Relations Management,’ ‘Marketing Communications,’ ‘Integrated Marketing Communications,’ International Public Relations, Public Relations Theory and Campaigns,’ ‘Graduation Project’ and Crisis Communications. She has successfully supervised and completed two master thesis and two PhD student dissertations. She currently continues to supervise two PhD students and one master student. Throughout her academic career, she spent a month in Israel on scholarship. She also spent six months at the University of Texas at Austin (USA) as a visiting scholar and worked with Prof. Maxwell McCombs and Dr. Ronald Anderson. She delivered courses twice for the Public Relations programme are Kluj Babes-Bolyai University, Romania. She was also an invited short-term visitor at Elon University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Indiana University at Bloomington (USA). During 2009 winter term, she will be teaching at Napoli University as part of the Erasmus exchange programme. Serra Görpe holds an ‘APR’ in Public Relations awarded by the ‘Universal Accreditation Board’. She worked as the Erasmus Programme Coordinator for Istanbul University, Communication Faculty. She is still a member of the Erasmus Commission Board for Public Relations and Advertising Department. She also holds a new position as a Member of the Communication Faculty Quality Commission in the Istanbul University Academic Assessment and Quality Improvement Board. Furthermore, she is involved in undergraduate education and department planning commissions of Public Relations and Advertising Department. Serra Görpe was the executive of the first Erasmus IP project in Istanbul University. Since 2004 she has been involved in an EU funded project titled ‘Transparency in Public Communication To a Europe with Values’ in participation with three European countries (Holland, Hungary and Romania). She has organised summer schools as part of the project. She has also been the executive of a second Erasmus IP Project since summer 2008. She has taken an active role in the symposium titled ‘International Communication Symposium- Communication in the Millennium, A Dialogue Between Turkish and American Communication Scholars’ since 2003, of which she has been a co-founder and co-executive in collaboration with Prof Maxwell McCombs (Texas University, Austin) and her colleague Associate Professor Dr. Erkan Yüksel (Anadolu University Communication Studies Faculty). In her 10 years of academic life she has over 30 papers presented/published nationally and internationally. AUSACE (Arab-American Communicators Association), International Public Relations Research Conference (University of Miami) and International Communication Symposium- Communication in the Millennium are among the conferences she attends regularly. She was the Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management (2002) (James Grunig ed.) and also edited the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) Gold Paper 15 series. She contributed to a book on organisational communication / public relations with two chapters (role studies in public relations / internal communication). She is also a chapter contributor on public relations and ethics in an edited book on ethics and wrote another book chapter (co-authored) on public relations education She translated a book (marketing public relations – 271 pages) to be published this Autumn by Rota Publishing. She published a book chapter overseas on media, woman and communication. She wrote public relations case studies in an online book published in English. She also has a chapter contribution to a book on ethics with her colleague. As mentioned in the detailed cv, she has two forthcoming book chapters to be published overseas; one on public relations/reputatin and agenda setting and the other on European Union and communications. Her current research include public relations education, international public relations, crisis management/issue management and social responsibility. She holds a Research award (incentive Award) with a colleague from ‘Let’s Research Project Competition’ by Researchers Association on Hoftstede- cultural values and Turkish youth. (December 2005). She was also awarded for educational activities at the international ‘Global Understanding Project’ which she initiated and supervised. Serra Görpe is a member of European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA), Vice- President of European Public Relations Confederation (CERP), a member of the Management Board o Turkish Public Relations Association (TÜHİD), TÜHİD member of TOBB Media and Communication Assembly and the Turkish Council Member of International Public Relations Association (IPRA). She is also a jury member of IPRA ‘Golden World Awards for Excellence in Public Relations’. She was an academic jury member for the 2009 PRISA PRISMA Public Relations Awards by South Africa Public Relations Association and the Public Relations Awards by Bulgaria Public Relations Association awarded the same year. She is the Vice President of BALKANCOM association which was founded in May 2009 and which brings together academics in communication studies. Serra Görpe speaks good English, French and German.
