IMPORTANCE OF CIS

The rapidly evolving Information Technology (IT) industry has revolutionized the way we live today. Most facets of our lives depend, to a greater or lesser degree, on computers and IT industry. From telephone systems to security systems, accounting to marketing, baby monitors to auto-pilot options, every industry, every household and every office is looking to ‘up grade’ itself by means of new technology and new software. CIS program graduates are prepared to successfully join the work force of this IT industry as technical and management professionals and play essential roles on the business team, typically designing and implementing hardware and software solutions to business problems. They are also expected to possess knowledge, experience and skills that will enable them to adapt to change in this dynamic field through a lifelong learning process.

AIMS:

The Department of CIS aims to emphasize strategies and technologies in deploying and managing modern information systems to satisfy the requirements of the newly emerging business sectors. After graduation, students will be able to:

  • Understand the role of information systems within a business organization and develop and use such systems for decision-making purposes.
  • Integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively plan, design, develop, test, evaluate and manage information systems.
  • Gain practical experience of value to today’s high-tech employers by developing course projects that are based on real-world system development scenarios and which make use of modern system methodologies.
  • Recognize the implications and the role of Internet technologies on information system design.
  • Develop an understanding of the wider context and issues involved in information systems such as e-commerce, e-business and IT-enabled transformation.
  • Enter postgraduate/professional studies.

EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

The Bachelor’s degree in CIS offers an undergraduate program of study with support of Department of Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Architecture and Engineering in that has courses which emphasize strategies and technologies in deploying and managing modern information systems to satisfy the requirements of the newly emerging economic sectors. To this end, the undergraduate programs encourage student internships and cooperative education participation.  Students may choose electives, which in conjunction with required courses, will prepare them for graduate studies in CIS related fields or career specialization. Upon successful completion of the four-year program requirements (130 credit hours with a minimum grade point average of 2.00), a student will be awarded a bachelor of science (B.Sc.) in computer information systems degree.

CIS graduates careers overlap with computer science graduates. The possible careers include:

Programmers,  Database Administrators, Network Administrators, Systems Analysts, Web Designers, information system developers, and information technology managers.
