English Preparatory School Building
The English Preparatory School is situated in the EUL Intelligent building. The construction of this building was completed in 2007 and it has been in use since then. The EPS has 20 classrooms, 2 visualcommunication labs, library, conference hall, writing centre, cafeteria and photocopy centre.
English Preparatory School Instructors
The medium of instruction is English at EPS. 60%of the EPS instructors are Turkish 40% of them are from different English-speaking countries. EPS aims to prepare students to reach an advanced level of English language knowledge which will let them easily follow their further studies in their departments.

To achieve this aim, EPS and its experienced instructors give importance to reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as to the formal grammar of the language.
Placement Exam
At the beginning of each academic year, newly registered students are required students are required to take the Placement Exam. The Placement Exam test the students' knowledge of reading, grammar and vocabulary. According to the result of this exam, initial of each student is determined. It is crucial students placed in the right level. There are 3 levels of classes :
Group A : Intermediate Level
Group B : Pre-Intermediate Level
Group C : Elementary Level
According to the Placement Exam results, the following procedure is used to determine the initial level of the students :
Prospective ELT students need a pasing mark of 70 or above. Those students who receive a mark of 60 to 69 points will have to take an edvanced English Placement Exam, including writing and speaking. Once students are sent to ELT Department, they are given another oral exam by the ELT Department to decide whether they are eligible to study in the department or not.
Exemption from EPS
Students may be exempted from the EPS Program if they have one of the following :
TOEFL-IBT 61
TOEFL (Paper Based) 500
TOEFL (Computer Base) 173
FCE passing mark
IELTS 5
GCE '0' LEVEL 'C'
GCSE 'C'
To be granted an exemption from EPS, a petition should be submitted to the EPS Director's office during the registration period enclosing a copy of the appropriate certificate and/or documenntation.
English Preparatory Programs
Students are required to attend the EPS at least 3 terms to be registered for their faculties. Students shall be at EPS 25 hours per week. Each level has different course books as listed below :
Group A : Face 2 Face Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate
*English Grammer in Use
Group B : Face 2 Face Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate
*English Grammer in Use
Group C : Face 2 Face Elementary, Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate
*English Grammer in Use
All EPS students must bring their course books and dictionaries to the class with them. Students who do not have their course books are not allowed to attend the classes.
Besides the class activities, students have the chance to repeat and practice what they have learned in the class at the centres listed below with the supervision of the instructors :
Self-Access Centre (SAC)
EPS students have the change to practice their English in language labs with the help of instructors. Each groups should spend 2 hours per week at the centre.
Writing Centre
The Writing Centre, a part of English Preparatory School, offers students a place to get professional feedback without formal evaluation. The primary purpose of the Writing Centre is to guide students to become better writers and the emphasis is on teaching students rather than proofreading or "fixing" papers. The Writing Centre is free of charge for all students, faculty and university staff and provides guidance in writing letters, applications, critiques, summaries, reviews, resumes, CVs, cover letters, paragraphs, essays and academic papers for any class. The Writing Centre is located on the 3rd floor of the EPS Building and is open Monday through Friday. Each group sgould spend 3 hours per week at the centre.
Speaking Club
The Speaking Club is affiliated to EPS and is open to all EPS students. It is a great opportunity for the students to improve their speaking skills. Students can join the activities of the club held in the EPS library (3rd Floor) anytime during the weekdays.
Translation Unit
The Translation Unit is the place where students can receive instructions related to translation techniques.
Assessment and Evaluation
Preparatory school scholarships are awarded at the end of the academic year to 3 students who have the highest achievement points scored in each group. The students who achieve the highest marks in each group are awarded a discount by the Schoolarship Commission.
At the end of the each academic year, in order to determine if the students are eligible to be registered for their faculties, the following procedure is applied. The passing mark is 60 out of 100. Prospective ELT students need to receive a passing mark of 70 and or above 70
The final evaluation mark of a student is calculated sccording to the following percentages of the marks received in 3 terms and the Proficiency Exam.

Proficiency Exam Mark : %40
Year-end evaluation mark : %100
+ BONUS (10 points)
The Bonus mark is determined by the pop-quizzes which are given throughout the 3 terms in order to evaluate the attendance of the students.
Proficiency Exam
All students are supposed to take the same Proficiency Exam at the end of the academic year. This exam constitutes %40 of the end of year evaluation mark. There are three main parts in the Proficiency Exam : grammar, writing, and reading. The Proficiency Exam covers the subjects taught throughout the year.
Unsuccessful students should attend the summer school. The aim of the 6-week summer school is to prepare the students for the Summer School Proficiency Exam.
Students who failed in the Summer School Proficiency Exam have the right to take the Placement Exam given at the begining of the new academic year. In case they fail in that exam, too, they ae supposed to attend the EPS Program for one more year.
If the students who would like to attend the summer school programs abroad ar our partner universties, Queen Mary University of London in England or Marshall University in the USA, successfully complete the summer school, they are exempted from the EPS Program. For detailed information about those universities, apply to the EPS Administration.
Participation and Attendance
Attendance is compulsory at EPS. Students are responsible for all the subjects taught during their absence. Students who are absent due their health problems should have their health reports ratified by the school doctor and hand them to their advisors.
Instructors do not have the right to let students leave the class even if students make excuses. Only the students who represent the university in an activity are accepted to be "excused" with the written permit by the Office of the Dean of Students.
The students who get a doctor's report on the exam day are accepted as excused and can take make-up exams. There will be 'Make-ups' for the following exams :
Students who wants to take the make-up exam should apply to the EPS Administration with a petition as shown in the sample below and doctor's report in at least 3 days. Students can take the make-up exams only after their reports are ratified by the EPS Administration.
General Services
Health :
There is always a doctor and nurse at the health centre located on the ground floor of Dormitory III. The distance between EUL and the nearest Hospital is only two kilometres. Our ambulance is always ready for emergency situations.
Psychological Consultation and Guiding Service :
There are always experienced psychologists at the health centre located on the ground floor of Dormitory III and they provide students with professional consultation and guiding services on any matters.
Computer Labs :
EPS has 7 computer labs. With the assistance of the EPS instructors, students can conduct individual studies and practice what they have learned during class hours.
Visual Communication Centre :
EPS has 2 visual communication labs. Students can follow the current news, watch movies and make use of the visual materials.
Mails :
EPS students can get their mails from the EPS Secretary on 3rd floor.
Student ID Card :
Students must always carry their identification cards with them. They will have to show them whenever they are asked. If necesary, invigilators have the right to check the students' ID cards before and during an examination. Students without IDs are not allowed to take the exam.
