English Preparatory School Building

English Preparatory School is situated in EUL Intelligent building. The construction of this building was completed in 2007 and it has been in use since that year. EPS is in service with its 20 classrooms, 2 visual communication labs, library, conference hall, writing centre, cafeteria and photocopy centre.

English Preparatory School Instructors

The medium of instruction is English at EPS. 60% of the EPS instructors are Turkish and 40% of them are from different English-speaking countries.

English Preparatory Programme

Students are required to attend the EPS for at least 2 terms to be registered to their faculties. Students shall be at EPS for 22-25 hours per week.

EPS aims to prepare students to reach an advanced level of English language knowledge which will let them easily follow their further studies in their departments.

Students completing the EPS program will be able to,
  • Converse effectively with a native speaker of English on social and professional topics,
  • Read and understand English books and articles,
  • Write English reports and essays,
  • Follow their courses and take notes.

To achieve this aim, EPS and its experienced instructors give importance to reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as to the formal grammar of the language

All EPS students are supposed to bring their course books and dictionaries to the class with them. Students who do not have their course books are not allowed to attend the classes.

Placement Exam

At the beginning of each academic year, newly registered students are required to take the Placement Exam. Placement Exam tests the students’ knowledge of reading, grammar, listening and vocabulary skills. According to the result of this exam, initial level of each student is determined. To be placed in the right level is crucial. Students are placed in respective groups according to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) criteria.

                                                              CEF Levels

A Groups: Beginner/Elementary Level  --   A0-A1-A2

B Groups: Pre- Intermediate Level        --    B1

Prospective ELT students need to receive a passing mark of 70 and or above 70 points. Those students who receive a mark from 60 to 69 points will have to take an advanced English Placement Exam including writing and speaking. Once students are sent to ELT Department, they are given another oral exam by ELT Department to decide whether they are eligible enough to study in the department or not.

Exemption, Placement and Proficiency

The exam given in the beginning of each academic year in order to determine the level of students, place them in classes and exempt the successful students from EPS is called Placement Exam. The exam which comprises the 40% of a student’s overall grade and given at the end of the academic year is called English Proficiency Exam. There are two different methods of Placement and Proficiency exams. In the beginning of each year, students are given Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT). According to the score they get in this exam, they are exempted from EPS or, if they fail, they are registered to EPS Programme and placed in classes according to their scores. Please note the criteria below:

Self-Access Centre (SAC) and Video Room (VR)

EPS students are provided with the opportunity to learn with the assistance of interned/computer based language learning tools and audio-visual materials which are available in SAC and VR. 1-2 hours of each group’s total weekly class hours is allocated for activities held in these facilities and the attendance is compulsory.

Assessment and Evaluation

At the end of the academic year, in order to determine if the students are eligible enough to be registered to their faculties, the following procedure is applied. The passing mark is 60 out of 100. Prospective ELT students need to receive a passing mark of 70 and or above 70.

The final evaluation mark of a student is calculated considering the following percentages of the marks received in two semesters and Proficiency Exam.

I.                   Calculation of 1st Semester Mark:

1st Midterm Exam:      %10

2nd Midterm Exam:     %40

Final Exam:                  %50

                                     ______

                                     %100

II.                Calculation of 2nd Semester Mark:

1st Midterm Exam:      %25

2nd Midterm Exam:     %20

Final Exam:                 %50

                                    _______

                                       %100

III. Calculation of the total points obtained in two semesters:

(30% of the 1st Semester Mark) + (30% of the 2nd Semester Mark) = Total Points     obtained in the two semesters.

IV.             Calculation of overall mark:

A.     I. Semester grade :                         %30

B.     II. Semester grade:                        %30

C.     Proficiency Exam Score :               %40

                                                 ________

Overall mark:                        % 100 + bonus points

BONUS: Each student will be given a bonus mark out of 10 points at the end of the academic year according to his/her performance during the classes, homework and projects done by the student.

Proficiency Examm

All students are supposed to take the same Proficiency Exam at the end of the academic year. This exam constitutes the 40% of the year-end evaluation mark. There are 3 main parts in Proficiency Exam: grammar, writing and reading. Proficiency Exam covers the subjects taught throughout the year.

Unsuccessful students should attend the Summer School. The aim of the 6-week summer school is to prepare the students for the Summer School Proficiency Exam. Students who failed in the Summer School Proficiency Exam have the right to take the Placement Exam given at the beginning of the new academic year. In case they fail in that exam, too, they are supposed to attend the EPS Program one more year.

Proficiency Exam in February

All students will be given a Proficiency Exam on 10 Feb 2012 regardless of their grades. Successful students will be exempted from the EPS Programme and they can register for their spring semester courses in their Faculties.

Scholarship

Preparatory school scholarships are awarded at the end of the academic year to 3 students who have the highest achievement points scored in each group. The students who achieve the highest marks in each group are awarded a discount by the Scholarship Commission.

Participation and Attendance

Attendance is compulsory at EPS and if a student fails to attend more 10% of the classes, s/he fails.  Students are responsible to make up all the lessons they missed during their absence. Students who are absent due to their health problems should have their health reports ratified by the school doctor and hand them to the EPS Secretary ( in 3 days). A student can only hand health reports covering a week’s total class hours in a semester at most. Instructors do not have the right to let students leave the class even if students make excuses. Only the students who represent the University in an approved activity are accepted to be “excused” with the written permit of the Office of the Dean of Students.

The students who get a doctor’s report on the exam day are accepted as excused and can take make-up exams. There will be ‘Make-ups’ for the following exams:

Mid-term exams

Final exams

Proficiency exam

Students who want to take the make-up exam should apply to the EPS Administration with a petition as shown in the sample below and doctor’s report in at least 3 days. Students can take the make-up exams only after their reports are ratified by the EPS Administration.
