The Department of Architecture is one of the oldest department of the Faculty of Architecture an Engineering at the European University of Lefke (E.U.L.). It has established itself, as one of the leading architectural design schools in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (T.R.N.C). The particular strengths of the architecture programme lie in its design studio based teaching and its links with British and Turkish Universities. The purpose of the four year undergraduate degree program in architecture is to provide a course of study leading to a recognised degree in preparation for a profession in architecture that is recognised both in Turkey and European, in anticipation of the TRNC and Turkey joining the European Union. Graduates in Architecture can work in the private sector in architectural and construction project offices, in planning and building regulation offices, in Government Planning Departments, or as academics in higher education and universities. The educational philosophy of the programme is to create a balance between theoretical and practical education while providing high standards of professional training which will be useful to graduates in their future profession in Architecture. The modular-based semester system enables students from the architecture programme to transfer to any other Department of Architecture, in the Middle East region, the European Union, in Turkey or North America. Similarly, students from other universities may transfer to the European University of Lefke. The B.A. course in Architecture is concerned with the whole of the built environment. Architects are creators of the built environment, and its custodians. The responsibilities of such a dual role requires that the course curriculum in architecture gives future architects not only the skills to design buildings and plan for urban development in the modern world, but also a deep understanding of people’s need for housing and for buildings for a very wide range of functions and purposes. Therefore, the programme is a demanding one. It requires students to have an engineering, plus an artistic sensitivity and a creative abilities. It requires students who can understand the complex technological processes of the modern construction industry, the skills of computer-aided architecture design and information technology. Successful students are willing and capable to collaborate with those of other related professional and academic disciplines in the realization of complex integrated development projects. In order to assist students to acquire such skills and capabilities, a wide range of courses and resources are made available to students of architecture. These provide the means whereby students may most effectively develop their natural talents and potential, and maximize their capabilities in chosen areas of specialization, in a program, which offers students alternative areas of specialist study through elective courses.
