ELT 515 Approaches, Methods & Techniques
 
This course is designed to introduce the theory and practice of teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language and to provide an analysis and discussion of the major approaches, methods and techniques used in English Language Teaching in their historical context. The course focuses on the awareness of student needs, classroom strategies and the use of technical aids to study.
 
ELT 507  Current Issues in ELT
 
Current issues and selected topics from the field of linguistics and their applications for EFL.
 
ELT 509 Research Methods in ELT (3,0)3
 
An overview of classroom-based research techniques and their implications for language classrooms. Theoretical issues and practical concerns focusing on types of research and their planning, implementation, analysis and reporting stages as typically conducted in foreign/second language learning and teaching.
 
ELT 511 Psychology and Second Language Learning
 
Educational and psychological approaches to English Language Teaching. A review and critical evaluation of the findings of educational psychology and their relevance to current practices in second language learning and teaching.
 
ELT 517 Curriculum Development (3-0)3
 
This course aims to provide a detailed overview of the principles of and procedures for designing and developing an English Language Teaching curriculum. It is also intended to provide concepts and procedures for those teachers who are in a position to take part in the development of their own curriculum and syllabuses.
 
ELT 519 Materials Development in ELT
 
How to develop appropriate, stimulating and effective materials in a variety of different contexts.
 
ELT 523  Second Language Acquisition (3,0)3
 
A review and critical evaluation of current research in first and particularly second language acquisition (SLA). An assessment of the relevance of this to current practices in second language learning and teaching.
 
ELT 542    Pragmatics and Discourse  (3,0)3
 
Description and analysis of language above the sentence; the relationship of language and the contexts and cultural influences which affect language in use – pragmatics.
 
ELT 546 Professional Development in ELT
 
How the career of an ELT teacher may develop and the various options which are available. In-service training and international opportunities and contacts.
 
ELT 548 General Linguistics
 
An analytical and contrastive approach to the areas of phonology, syntax, morphology, lexicogrammar and discourse.
 
ELT 520 MA/ELT Term Project  (non-credit)
 
In order to complete the MA/ELT degree, students are required to produce a term project, the topic of which has to be approved by the department and the standard of which must be appropriate for a Master’s degree.
 
ELT 522 Seminar in ELT (non-credit)
 
This course is essential preparation for your MA thesis through prescribed readings, written and/or oral presentation of the work developed. The course deals with theoretical, ethical and methodological issues that are central to research on language learning. It has been designed to provide support for any MA student undertaking research in the Department.
 
ELT 530   MA Thesis   (non-credit)
 
Supervised independent research on a topic approved by the student’s advisor and chairman of the department or the director of the MA TEFL program.  It must be an original contribution to the field of English Language Teaching.
