ELT - 2005-2006 Academic Year Course Description

ELT 121-122 Oral Communication Skills  (3,0)3
This course aims to provide students’ competence in speaking English. The primary objective in the first semester is to improve students’ fluency rather than their accuracy. This will be promoted through the reading of plays, performance of guided role plays, discussions and informal report presentation on interviews that students have had with non-native speakers. In the second semester, the notion of “appropriate” is introduced, and students will be asked to take part in prepared simulations and prepare presentations on subjects of their own interest. Throughout the course there will be systematic practice of areas of English Phonology which are traditionally difficult for Turkish speakers.
ELT 123-124 Reading Skills      (3,0)3
This one-year course introduces students to study reading, which means reading simple academic texts with the aim of remembering their content at the least until examination time but preferably with the aim of making the content part of their permanent stock of knowledge. The reading passages will therefore be chosen for the volume of their content on topics such as language teaching, culture and general knowledge. The course will also introduce different reading skills such as skimming, scanning, surveying and will help.
ELT 125-126   Writing Skills      (3,0)3
This one year course begins by revising sentence structures particularly those containing more than one clause. Correct spelling and punctuation will be focused on. Next, practice will be given in writing short texts using cohesive devices such as conjunctions, reference words, ellipsis and substitution. In the second semester, students will be introduced to the different types of paragraph structure needed to write, for example, narrative, process description, definition, illustration, cause and effect, comparison and contrast. Emphasis will be placed not only on correctness and revision but also on structural flexibility allowing for thematic continuity and effective focusing on new information.
ELT 127-128  English Grammar   (3,0)3
This one year course begins a systematic coverage of English Grammar covering both Morphology and Syntax. In morphology emphasis will be placed on word formation and its value in enlarging the students own vocabulary through knowledge of roots and derivational affixes. Recent work on the study and teaching of vocabulary will be explored. Syntax will be presented as an interlocking system in which grammatical choices are seen to contribute to communicative meaning, not as discrete structures.
TURK 101 Turkish Written Communication Skills   (2,0)2
This course aims to improve students’ competence in their Turkish written communication skill. The course will concentrate mainly on academic writing exposition and argument, report writing and term papers. A smaller section of the course will introduce students to creative writing. (For Turkish speaking students only).
TURK 112   Turkish Oral Communication Skills (2,0)2
This development of ability to speak well in front of an audience with or without a script: clear diction, body language, eye contact, variable speed and loudness, control of tune units; variation of style for different purposes and audiences; discussions, debates and entertainment eg: poetry, reading and drama. (For Turkish speaking students only).  
COMP 100 Introduction to Computers   (1,2)2
This one semester course aims to give students the basic skills in using computers and writing reports on Microsoft.
EDU 101  Introduction to Teaching   (3,0)3
Historical foundations of education; Turkish and Cypriot educational systems, the school and classroom environment, principles and characteristics of teaching, the centrality of the learner, analysis and discussion of classroom events, classroom communication, motivation, improving classroom teaching.
EDU 102   School Experience    (1,4)3
In this course teacher trainees observe classes and study teaching from a different perspective. The school committee and its administration, everyday life at school, communication between parents and the school, the school and its problems, equipment, textbooks and assorted aspects of the teaching profession.
ELT 211   Introduction to Linguistics I  (3,0)3
An overview of the different aspects of the study of language:  phonology, morphology, syntax,  discourse.
EDU 203 Learning and Development    (3,0)3
The course will examine the development of human beings from different perspectives, such as individual, social, psychological, ethical, physical and cognitive. The course will also provide an introduction to child development, adult learning, and the importance of individual differences and different learning styles in learning and teaching.
ELT 221   Advanced Reading Skills     (3,0)3
The study of academic texts about language and other subjects that constitute general knowledge. Emphasis on discourse structure, vocabulary acquisition and the structure of complex sentences. Appreciation of different stylistic features.
ELT 241 Introduction to English Literature I    (3,0)3
Introduction to accessible poetry, drama, and short stories and selected passages from novels. Emphasis on literature as something pleasurable, to be enjoyed for its own sake and not as an academic subject to be learned ‘about’. Development of critical skills and sensitive response.
ELT 213 Turkish Phonology and Morphology      (3,0)3
Phonological and morphological analysis of Turkish syntax, semantics and discourse. Application of modern methods and approaches to the teaching of Turkish as a first and second language. (For Turkish-speaking students only)
ELT 215 Approaches to English Language Teaching(3,0)3
A historical review of the major approaches and methods of foreign language teaching, such as: Grammar Translation, Direct Method, Audio-Lingual Method, Communicative Approach, Task-based Learning, Silent Way, Suggestopedia, etc. Consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of each.

EDU 204   Planning and Evaluation in Teaching   (3,2)4
Developing a syllabus, lesson plans and daily programmes; choosing and grading content; teaching procedures; evaluation of specific materials.
ELT 222   Advanced Writing Skills   (3,0)3
The development of the writing skill to include longer assignments such as projects, examination essays and reports. The use of spider grams, mind-maps and outlines to organize ideas before writing; proof reading and editing; clearly marked discourse structure; emphasis on unity, coherence and cohesion.

ELT 311   Language Acquisition    (3,0)3
The course will provide an introduction to first and second language acquisition, discuss the stages in the process of acquisition and possible applications in second language learning and teaching. Major theories and approaches to language acquisition, such as Behaviourist, Innatist,  Interactionist, Krashen’s Monitor Model, Interlanguage Theory, Cognitive Theory will be examined.
ELT 305  English to Turkish Translation    (3,0)3
The aim of the course is not to produce translators but to explore the ways in which translation can be usefully employed in language teaching. Translation of a variety of texts: informal, formal, general and academic
EDU 313  Methodology in ELT I      (2,2)3
Practical training in current approaches to foreign language teaching (particularly the communicative approach and task-based learning). Teaching the four macro skills at various levels, micro-teaching, evaluation.
ELT 315   Drama: Analysis and Teaching      (3,0)3
Drama will be approached, not by text analysis, but by “going to the play” i.e. watching videos of plays. The techniques of drama will then be exploited in the writing of mini-dramas: short monologues, dialogues and playlets to be acted out by students; unscripted role-play. The scripted versions will contain whatever structures and lexical items need to be taught but this will be done indirectly through involvement in the drama of exciting, emotional and humorous situations. Pronunciations and intonation will receive special emphasis.
ELT 319   Textbook Evaluation in ELT   (2,2)3
A detailed examination of the course books. Evaluation of the content, grading, sequencing, language level; suggested methodology and teaching procedures.
ELT 331   Short Stories: Analysis and Teaching    (3,0)3
The course has a dual purpose, one literary, the other pedagogical. British and American short stories, as well as translations from other languages, will be analysed critically. They will then be assessed for suitability to be used at appropriate levels for language teaching purposes. For the lower levels, children’s literature will be included.
EDU 302   Classroom Management    (2,2)3
Psychological and social effects on student behaviour; the classroom environment and group dynamics; discipline; the management of class time; communication and motivation; the start of a lesson; creating a positive environment for learning; behavioural problems in class; the interrelations among the above.
EDU 304 Educational Technology and Materials Development  (2,2)3
The characteristics of various teaching technologies, their use and place in the teaching process; the development of materials such as study sheets, OHP transparencies, video and computer- assisted language learning programs (CALL).

ELT 332   Poetry: Analysis and Teaching    (3,0)3
Examination of selected works of British and American poets; the characteristics of different kinds of poetry; the nature of poetry as a distinct form of literature. The use of poetry in learning a foreign language.

ELT 411   Materials Development and Adaptation (3,0)3
The core of the course is the examination of the role of course books. However, because of their nature, course books are imperfect and cannot provide all the answers to a teacher’s individual situation. Evaluation of several course books will lead to amending , adapting and substituting them where need be, often with materials written by the student teacher.
ELT 403   TEFL for Young Children     (3,0)3
The adaptation of teaching techniques to suit young learners, bearing in mind their cognitive development, attention span and learning styles. The importance of the affective domain; the use of songs , play-acting, story-telling, visuals and videos for children.
ELT 413   Language Testing and Evaluation   (3,0)3
The focus will be on what useful and reliable instruments are available for classroom language teachers. There will therefore be considerable practical work on constructing tests, analysing test results, weighting, and the characteristics of a good test.
ELT 419   Research Techniques     (3,0)3
The course aims to 1) introduce research techniques and methods to find out about learner needs, preferences and learning styles. 2) acquaint students with research methods to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of their teaching. 3)facilitate the understanding and application of research concepts, design and tools. 4)provide opportunities for the selection, preparation, application and analysis of a research problem. Provide opportunities for evaluation and review of published research reports. 6) encourage understanding of ethical issues in educational research.

Visits to local schools to observe experienced teachers in action. Trainees are expected to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses in preparation for their teaching practice in the final semester.
EDU 404   Guidance and Counselling     (3,0)3
The aims of student counselling and its role in teaching; description of counselling fields; principles of counselling; getting to know individuals; gathering and distributing information; psychological guidance, social relations; detecting needs for special education.
ELT 432 The Novel Analysis and Teaching
Analysis and criticism of selected novels. The exploitation of passages of narrative, description and dialogue in language teaching.
EDU 420    Teaching Practice            (2,6)5hjghj
The culmination of teacher education and training. Sustained teaching in local schools; keeping a diary of school experience in and out of the classroom; two hours a week of seminars reporting; evaluating and sharing experience; final written report and self-evaluation of teaching experience; final evaluation by cooperating teachers and course lecturer.
HIST 100 History of Turkish Reforms (2,0)2
History of the construction of the Turkish Republic under the light of Kemal Atatürk’s principles this course is designed for Turkish speaking students.
