ARCH 511 Conservation Of The Built Environment And The Cultural Heritage (3,0)3
The objectives of the course are to introduce the students to the philosophy of conservation, to the principles of cultural planning, to the techniques of recording, repair and rehabilitation of historic buildings, traditional settlements and sites, and to the role of international agencies in promoting conservation policies. Maintenance strategies in conservation will be studied, and a variety of cultural heritage management practices and initiatives reviewed.
ARCH 513 Planning And Urban Design (3,0)3
This both practical and theoretical course will include a series of design studies supported by lectures, which explore current urban design theories and methods, introduce students to the analysis of urban problems in any context, and enable them to produce alternative design solutions for an analysed area. Urban design analytical theories will be developed through design exercises and lectures based on morphology, perception, and behaviour, and urban form theories. Urban design typologies, based on cultures located in different geographical settings with distinct climatic conditions will be analysed through an historical review of `current’ urban design theory.
ARCH 515 Housing And Environmental Studies (3,0)3
This course is divided into several components enabling students to study contemporary issues affecting the development of housing within the built environment worldwide. Global environmental issues, urban and rural housing issues, housing delivery systems, rural community planning and development, energy conservation and the exploitation of natural sources of energy, especially solar energy, form the content of course components.
Special emphasis will be given to the development needs of the TRNC, by examining its current urban and rural housing problems, by studying future development plans, and by comparing the country to other developing countries experiencing similar problems.
ARCH 517 Theory Of Architecture (3,0)3
The objective of the course is to consider critical issues in architecture. It will study how ideas are formed, what conditions and considerations influence the conceptions, how they are adapted and used in building, etc. Historical buildings will be used as examples and comparative studies will be made in order to develop the students’ critical faculty.
The course will study the procedure of transition from traditional to modern design and building. Its objective is to examine general trends or tendencies, when there is a change from traditional to modern architecture. It will try to find out characteristics, which may be similar or even identical in every culture. Particular attention will be paid to the development of modern architecture in Turkey and Cyprus.
Throughout the course the term’ architecture’ is used in its widest sense and will cover other components of the built environment such as structural engineering, city planning, landscape architecture, interior architecture and industrial design in order to clarify ideas or to point out parallel or controversial developments in allied fields.
ARCH 518 Energy & Environmental Consciousness in Architecture (3,0)3
Climatic considerations and their significance in the design process of the built environment emphasizing the necessity of different architecture for different climates. Future energy systems. Thermal comfort, heating forms and space use, consumer's control of heating. Heat flow through buildings, review of related regulations. Heat load coefficient, shape and thermal performance of buildings. Management of heating systems, energy accounting. Energy conservation projects, solar heating systems. Determining the energy situation of a building by: weather data; response factors; thermal load analysis; necessary equipment and systems analysis; owning and operating cost analysis. Special emphasis on thermal load analysis and calculation of the thermal load of a building both for heating and cooling purposes.
ARCH 520 Seminar (non-credit)
Seminar in the related area of interest after the completion of courses. Seminar is graded on success or fail basis.
ARCH 521 Conservation And Cultural Heritage (Major Project) (6,0)6
The course follows on from ARCH 511 with detailed investigations of the nature of traditional building materials, the causes of their decay and appropriate-repair techniques. A series of case studies of a range of conservation projects will assist students to develop their own conservation or cultural heritage design project proposals.
ARCH 522 Housing And Environmental Design (Major Project) (6,0)6
The environment and its effects on buildings, ultimately users, has without doubt become a corner stone in contemporary building design. No designer, nowadays, can afford to ignore environmental design due to its strong interdependence with other design related disciplines such as sociology, economics, ecology, on the one hand, and its weight in current building regulation on the other.
The objective of this course is two fold. First to introduce students to a better understanding of environmental design concepts, tools and techniques; and second to develop a systematic design approach to be utilised at a practical level.
ARCH 523 Planning And Urban Design (Major Project) (6,0)6
The aim of this elective is to complete the approach started in ARCH 513 by extending the approach to the discussion of urban design theories related to sustainability and environmental problems. Urban patterns, based on different determinants of urban from will be analysed through a critical review, which will be linked to specific design exercises. Field studies will be undertaken. Students will gain experience and understanding through the application of the theory to their major project through helping them to develop a realistic `brief’, which will take into consideration current ecological and environmental problems.
ARCH 524 Theory Of Architecture (Major Project)(6,0)6
The aim of this elective is to demonstrate the students the students competence in design by applying a series of design methodologies construction technologies and environmental control systems, within the context of current architectural theories to a complex architectural project.
ARCH 526 Research Methods (3,0)3
The course is organized to provide students with the theoretical and practical support needed to write their final dissertation. For that purpose the course will start with a quick review of the relevant research tools and will follow all the way through with specific individual tutorials related to each individual dissertation.
ARCH 528 Professional Practices And Construction Management (3,0)3
The objective of this course is to introduce students to principles of professional architecture practice and to construction management functions (planning, organisation, staffing, leading, controlling, etc). This course will attempt to examine the effects of managerial skills (technical, human, conceptual and design) on the quality of the built environment. The aim is to make students-practitioners aware of the advantages of efficient management of practices and construction projects, that is productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency.
ARCH 530 Dissertation (non-credit)
The thesis must be original and revel the student’s ability in investigation and analysis and have a practical application in the world of their profession. The thesis should be on a subject decided upon both by advisor and student. The thesis should be submitted after successful completion of required courses and defended by the candidate in front of jury. The thesis is graded on success of fail basis.
