Visual Communication Design - Course Descriptions

VCMD 101 Basic Design I (4,4)6
A studio course dealing with basic principles and elements of design as applied to 2 D forms. Emphasis on the exploration of the nature of design problems and development of basic design concepts, expressed in variety of media and graphic articulation techniques. The visual and psychological effects of colour are an important tool used by the artist and graphic designers. A through knowledge of colour combinations of characteristics of colour in design, and of the effects of colour principles through individual class projects. VCMD 102 Basic Design II (4,4)6
This course introduces students to graphic design as a form of visual communication through the use of type, image, form and colour. Projects explore design processes in two and three dimentions, visual identity and communication, thematic structure and hierarchy, creative problem solving and basic design practice of critiques and discussion. VCMD 111 Freehand Drawing (2,2)3
In the course students learn to see and draw accurately from direct observation as well as imagination. Students study visual translation of shape, proportion, and perspective. Emphasis will be placed on accurately rendering basic forms on a two- dimensional surface from different angles and eye levels. Students will recognize and draw these forms in simple still life. Basic drawing techniques in black and white media will be covered.
VCMD 112 Life Drawing (2,2)3
Students will continue to translate line, shape and value as it relates to the two dimensional surface. The course will expand on black and white media to include colour. Students will draw from observation and extend that knowledge to include manipulating subject matter by simplifying and abstracting objects. Students will continue to break down still life to basic forms and describe it through planes and geometric structure, as well as building up forms to create invented drawings.
VCMD 103 History Art & Culture I (3,0)3
The aim of the course is to combine the history and theories of art together with the awarness of critisim involving ideas and art movements throughout the ages. The life of the artists and the cultural athmosphere of their artistic productivity will also be examined. The objective of the course is to lead the students to practice their theories and ideals through design process. The emphasis is on the Western art. It begins with the Prehistoric art, Mesopotamian, Eygptian, Greek and Roman Art until the stage of Medieval period.
VCMD 104 History Art & Culture II (3,0)3
The aim of the course is to combine the history and theories of art together with the awarenessof critisisim involving ideas and art movements through the ages. The life of the artists and the cultural atmosphere of their artistic productivity will also be examied.
COMM 101 Introduction To Comm. (3,0)3
This course is designed to acquaint students with the broadcasting journalism and allied professions. It consists of a survey of the organization, functions and uses of the mass media, and their impact on life styles, images, standards, philosophies, government and business. Emphasis will be placed on the experienced environment.
COMM 102 History Of Mass. Comm. (3,0)3
This course includes the development of mass communication and its history, the main factors that played role in the development of mass communication and the relationship between the history of communication and the history of humanity.
COMP 100 Introduction To Comp. (2,2)3
Introductory course to computers and their application. Topics covered include hardware and software concepts, as well as consideration of the organization and functioning of a computer system, along with office automation, databases, and various applications of computers. Practical sessions include DOS commands, word processing, and spreadsheets.
ENGL 121 English I (3,0)3
This course wills concentrates on English for academic purposes in order to assist students with their academic studies. In order to do this similar operations followed in their faculties will be practiced.
TURK 105 Turkish (3,0)3
In this course correct pronounciation of the Turkish sounds will be studied. Theoretical and practical studies would be carried out on types of communications aiming to convince and to inform the audience.
TURK 106 Turkish Text Writing (3,0)3
A general introduction about text writing together with the rules of text writing will be studied. Practical studies will be carried out about the text used in the areas of TV, radio, newspapers and public relations.
ENGL 122 English II (3,0)3
The continuation of ENGL 121 with similar objectives; topics used will be more related to students degree subjects. Pre-requisite: ENGL 121
VCMD 201 Visual Comm. Design I (2,2)3
This introductury class deals with the fundamentals of communicating ideas through the designed integration of concepts, type and image. Through creative assignments, lectures and demonstration, the students consider the structural ordering and arragement of design elements together with related visual association and meaning. Basic studio methods and the role of the designer within production processes are examined.
VCMD 202 Visual Comm. Design II (2,2)3
With the framework of design thinking already explored, this class examines structure, formats, sequences and unities within a logo and trademark designing, publications, direct mail, packaging and other graphic forms. Emphasis is upon expanding and developing ideas to their full potential, looking at options and rigorously examining design decisions.
VCMD 207 Illustration I (2,2)3
Students explore the techniques of black and white, two- colour and full – colour illustration using various materials of the illustrator. Special emphasis is placed on perfecting the skills of effective storyboard presentation. Students are encouraged to concreate their efforts on developing a personal style. VCMD 211 Typography I (2,2)3
Developing sensitivity towards of varied lettering and typographic forms is an essential foundation for all Graphic designers. This class encourages a broad, creative approach to the subject as well as explaining the history of typography.
VCMD 212 Typography II (2,2)3
The course will include an analysis of both historical and contemporary trends in type design, and the applications of typography to the field of graphic design. Various course activities include reading, lecture, visual presentations, discussion (critics of work in progress and finished work), and creative work. Students are required to participate in course lectures, discussions, and design assignments. Text books: “Typographic Design: Form and Communication” by Carter, Day, Meggs, “The History of Graphic Design” by Philip Meggs, “American Typography Today “by Rob Carter, “Çağdaş Tipografinin Temelleri” by Namık Kemal Sarıkavak.
VCMD 205 Interactive Multimedia I (2,2)3
Students will learn the principles and fundamental techniques of creating interactive multimedia. Critically reviewing current professional multimedia projects is an important part of the learning process.
VCMD 206 Interactive Multimedia II (2,2)3
Conceptual, technical, and aesthetic proficiency in interactive multimedia is the goal of this course. The final requirement is to create an interactive CD_ROM as a group project. Continuing emphasis on theory and methods of interactive design.
VCMD 213 Photography I (2,2)3
This course is a study of basic photography including camera and darkroom techniques. Photographic exploration into areas of picture composition, exposure control, materials and equipment, film processing and print making are dealt within this context.
VCMD 214 Photography II (2,2)3
An introduction will be given to concerns and methods in the contemporary practice or digital photography in a computer lab environment. Various software programs on different computer systems will be explored as essential tools.
VCMD 301 Visual Comm. Design III (2,2)3
ın this course we continue to explore the role of visual communication design in communicating information in visual form. Emphasis is placed on competency in research, production, and presentation of advanced- level projects which encompass issues addressed in earlier courses. Text book: Not applicable.
VCMD 302 Visual Comm. Design IV (2,2)3

VCMD 305 Web Design I (2,2)3
An introduction to the concepts of HTML authoring for the creation of dynamic multi-page web-sites. The topics to be handled include structural HTML, text elements and attributes, tables, frames and forms and the integration of graphics.
VCMD 306 Web Design II (2,2)3
The course explores the various particular to the Web form the viewpoint of creating and maintaining interactive, user-driven web sites. The student will achieve pravtice in Internet protpcols, form based scripting techniques, plug-ins and helper applications and create his/her own multi-page web-site.
VCMD 315 2 D Animation Tech. (2,2)3
This course provides computer graphics major with their first explosure to hands-on two-dimensional paint and image processing techniques. Involves use of a paint system with drawing, coloring, and video digitizing capabilities.
VCMD 316 3 D Animation Tech. (2,2)3
This course privides computer graphics majors with exposure to advanced three-dimensional computer animation. The course concentrates on hierarchical animation, time curves and motion paths, color and light animation, and advanced rendering techniques. Advanced script and character sheet development, lip and music synchronization, and procedural description of natural phenomena are explored.
VCMD 317 Video Production Tech. I (2,2)3
The aim of the course is to give a general introduction for video and sound editing in audio-visusal media. Topics are basic tools of editing, principles of editing, technical improvements and solutions.
VCMD 318 Video Production Tech. II (2,2)3
This course covers the fundamentals of video production and video technology, then progresses to advanced time-code editing, operation of the special effects generator and basic sound mixing. In addition to technical background, the critique and theory of editing aesthetics are covered.
VCMB 321 Princıples Of Advertising (3,0)3
This course is an introduction to advertising and the creative abilities needed to be successful in this lucrative field. Through a series of assignments, students will develop concepts, write copy, design and present ads. Multiple pieces of portfolio quality work is the goal.
VCMB 322 Advertising Design (2,2)3
The course takes a more developed, specific focus on projects, and campaign development in both print and broadcast media. Coceptual thinking, creative problem solving, copy writing, image relationship and presentation skills will be developed.
VCMD 401 Visual Comm. Design V (4,4)6
This class prepares students for work as creative professionals in the visual communication design business. The project will cover full promotional package include print ads. advertising and package design. Text book: Not applicable.
VCMD 402 Visual Comm. Design V (4,4)6
Graduation Project. This advanced course simulates the demands of the contemporary design market. You refine your design and presentation skills by working on a complex project involving multiple components. You develop and produce design proposals for a specific “real-world” project involving two and three dimentional aspects. The students create an appropriate goal, time line, and final presentation for a dynamic design identity program. This approach to understanding visual communication design allows you to learn and apply problem solving techniques and develop the presentation and team skills professionals employ to work with clients. VCMD 421 Portfolio Design I (3,0)3
This course is the first stage for portfolio design courses and taken by fourth year students. Students are responsible to choose the best works done through the earlier terms.
VCMD 422 Portfolio Design II (3, 0)3
This course is the second stage for portfolio design courses. Students will try to establish strong correspondence between the presentation material and will be guided by their instructor in order to find the best way to represent themselfs by this portfolio on their job interviewing.
COMM 419 Research Tech. In Media (3,0)3
The purpose of the course is to acquaint the students with various conceptual issues surrounding specific research, to develop the students ability to carry out meaningful research in the administrative and social areas and to present their result in a clear and unambiguous way.
COMM 402 Media Ethics (3,0)3
This course provides students with a unique opportunity to explore and develop ethical motivations to their work as communicators in public life. It explores a wide variety of ethical issues that include censorship, conflicts of interest, portrayal of minorities, the olderly, and children.
